To chalk this up to one great dude is not a good solution

When I say, “I’m an Atheist,” I must treasure every day
This life is all we’ve really got — Can’t let it waste away

When I say, “I’m an Atheist,” I’m not saying that I’m bad
The fact that many think we are is really very sad

Well, I was raised Catholic, and the Vatican is currently one of the strongest opponents of creationism out there, which is why I sure wouldn’t claim all religious people are opponents of science.. But, there is something inherently irrational in believing in something for which there is absolutely no proof, much less actual evidence, and which is completely fantastic. And really, it’s fascinating how people can believe completely and without question in their own god or gods, while casually dismissing those others believe in today, or in history. Why should I believe the Judeo-Christian-Muslim God is real, but Zeus and Apollo just fictional characters? Why not believe my garden is occupied by fairies? Or that there’s a secret school for wizards and witches in the UK? There’s an equal absence of evidence for all.. I really don’t understand the ability of people to genuinely believe in such things..

Then I have grown up with a priest not properly sanctioned by the vatican, because he sure as Hell believes in evolution.(and keeps his homilies short during football season)

Then don't. Don't believe in God, believe in whoever you want. Believe in little green men, for all I care. But whether you like it or not, there ARE people who believe, and aren't complete asses about it, and they deserve a little more respect that the lot of you are giving them.

I'm not here to start a debate about whose religion is correct, and whose religion is truck load of tripe. I'm just saying live, and let live, and by all means make your religious jokes, but don't be malicious about it. People shouldn't be made fun of because they believe in something. I think the justice system is a load of crap, but you don't see me going around telling policemen they're suckers. And maybe, for all you know, these people have proof of their own, and it's enough for them.

All well and good, but at the moment I live in a society that views nonbelievers as something akin to murderers, and my pagan friends as sworn enemies of Jesus.. I’m not demanding that school kids stand up in class each morning and renounce religion, but there’s a heck of a lot of people demanding they stand up and pray to the majority’s god.. Geez, where I live there’s people who publically condemn me as being evil for celebrating Halloween…

Then you should move. To Canada. because Canada is so cool. My country is too, usually. Any prayers ask end with 'in the manner according to your beliefs' Normally atheists(a friend of mine) sort of close their eyes and try not to fall asleep(she tipped over once). My mother spends most of her time telling me that my children must be raised catholic. I'm plotting to tell her I'm a lesbian just to watch her reaction. She'll probably try to exorcise me.

You better be careful, every Catholic diocese in the world has an official exorcist on staff! They don’t advertise it too much ^_^

My real problem here is with the Christian fundamentalists, of which there are many. Catholics tend to be middle of the road secularists who are skeptical of their religious authorities.. Just look at the vote in Spain that legalized gay marriage, in an overwhelmingly Catholic country.. Hmm, and I do have Irish citizenship…

The whole reason why we atheists get a little hot under the collar every now and then is that religious people are not respecting us! Ever so often we meet up with someone like you, a live and let live sorta person. Great! But the pope is still banning contraception and promoting abstinence and thereby fucking up the lives of women around the world! Some f... jackass of a catholic cleric in Africa is telling people not to use contraception because the Europeans have put diseases in the condoms. About 200 women have dies in Nicarauga because the religious anti-abortion activist succeeded in banning abortions in that country. The president banned stem cell research and boosting abstinence programming that doesn't work because of his religious convictions. What is the first plank that is drawn for when people are screaming at homosexuals? The Bible. Or the Koran. Or whatever. Every goddamn time i turn around, some pest is trying to fuck up scientific education by promoting creationism and trying to justify it using the bible.And calling evolution a theory. Atheists are forever condemned as angry, wicked , evil being who will be pedophiles and rape children and every bad thing under the sun, all of which ignores the atrocities that take place in religion's name. The Moral f..ing Majority is trying their very best to censor my speech while forcing me to listen to their bullshit. You say the religious are oppressed? Why do you think the democrats are all spouting their faith all of a sudden? Think you that an atheist can win the election? Even when the church going politicians have proven conclusively that they can lie cheat, fornicate, commit adultery, kill, f.. up the environment and commit every crime under the sun quite well while casting us as Satan's spawn?

By all means, make fun of the jackasses. But the live and let live people, gotta make exceptions for them, my love. It seems unfair to group them up altogether.

These people, are human. And humans err. I will not say that God should have known better, because they bloody well should known better themselves. I cannot give you the explanations you are looking for because my belief has been tempered by cynicism or my own brand, and does not necessarily coincide with the beliefs of others.

You could list to me every injustice in the world that religious people have done and I still would not be able to answer because I speak for no one but myself. And I could tell you we are all sorry for it, but in the end, we'd both know only one of us meant it.
