Note to the colorblind: BE LESS BLIND

In the good things dept.:
[livejournal.com profile] verb_noire, a new publishing venture focused on POC, disabled, LGBT fiction is fundraising. If you can contribute, can you click "Chip In"?

I am conflicted about [livejournal.com profile] verb_noire.

The fact that I am currently struggling not to be broke, and am planning to cure this affliction by going back to college, of all things, kind of makes me not have to worry about donating. It would be fiscally irresponsible for me to do it right now.

But. . . what if it weren't?

The only thing I know about this new publishing venture is that it is 1) new and 2) POC-and-other-minority-class-centered. And that is a good and fine thing.

But I don't know anything about the people running it. I don't know if there's a track record for me to go on. That means I have no way to make an educated guess on what's going to get published, and if I wind up even inadvertently financing the publishing of a POC version of Christopher Knight? Why, I'm going to go on a worldwide killing spree, and that will be only because I cannot figure out how to kill the entire universe for fucking with me on something this important.

But I don't want to see something like this-- something that has the potential to be big and important in a way that no longer allows fandom to ignore us, or the N-H's of the world to attempt to silence us-- die because of a comparatively trivial thing like lack of startup funds.

Is there anywhere I can go to find out more information? Or am I simply going to have to take a leap of faith (when I can afford to)?

tl;dr: Arrrgh.

You have the right to do some research and stuff after all, before you put your money into this. The guys behind it are [livejournal.com profile] karynthia and [livejournal.com profile] wayoftheid you could take a look at their ljays to see if you like what they have to say. I think they are good peoples and highly unlikely to pull shenanigans.

It's not a trust issue at all for me. It's me not wanting to be responsible even a teeny bit for another Christopher Knight. I have no doubts regarding the integrity of the people involved; I'm a cynical bastard, yes, but not that cynical.

When I say "track record" I mean of things professionally written and/or edited. In lieu of that, I suppose I can check out their LJs. Hell, I might wind up submitting to them myself!

I personally know [livejournal.com profile] thewayoftheid and she's really dedicated in trying to bring more POC writing out there. Even if you can't give anything now, just telling other people about it or supporting the authors they'll publish will be a great help!
