Tamar-kali

Tamar-kali "Boot" music video

Myspace

A native Brooklynite, Tamar-kali started to cut her teeth on the NYC rock scene with infamous soulcore psychos Funkface circa 1993. Shortly thereafter, the all-boy post hardcore outfit Song of Seven was in danger of disbanding when original front man Israel left to record and perform with the legendary Bad Brains. Tamar-kali was enlisted to add another dimension to Song of Sevens sound. As the bands front woman, Tamar-kali established herself as a dominant force with a resonant voice. Eventually, her strength as a woman in a male dominated genre led to creative conflict and compelled her toward her own expression as a writer and vocalist. She took the occasional break from developing original material to lend her voice in support of such artists as Fishbone and Outkast. The start of 2005 found Tamar-kali heading up her own production company, releasing The Geechee Goddess Hardcore Warrior Soul EP on her upstart record label, and manning 3 solo projectsthe haunting Psychochamber Ensemble, the uncompromising Pseudoacoustic Siren Songs and the original 5-piece electric configuration.MORE

The Negro Problem - Comikbuchland

The Negro Problem
I was half-listening to my favorite listener-supported radio station (anybody notice how the quality of life improves when all corporate influence is extricated?) and caught the following lyrics, from a resonant, yowling voice that sounded like a black Cat Stevens, about the plight of a gay Ken doll:

Someday soon
I'll be in your child's room
I'll be forced to kiss
Barbie's plastic tits
And I will hate myself,
and what's more, I'll hate you

Suddenly the fist in my rib cage unfolded. Somebody, somehow, had broken free of the norm and was writing pretty, acoustic-guitar lines with nifty chord changes and totally irreverent lyrics, despite the lack of cash and stadium blow jobs they were likely to get from it. Wholly without hope for major-label distribution, and for my money, that's a good thing.

I sat in the car double-parked and clutching the steering wheel, refusing to move until the band identified itself, and discovered that the Negro Problem, a small outfit from L.A., were doing a monthlong residency at New York's Knitting Factory. I made it a point to go see them; to go out, at night even, on a week in which I would rather have done nothing but hide under my couch and take all the Percocet left over from last year's oral surgery, and whimper and chew my thumbs.MORE

Who were Death?

thubmnail icon: New Old Death - "Politicians In My Eyes"

Brothers David, Bobby and Dannis Hackney started making music together in 1971, when David, the eldest, was 19 and Dannis, the youngest, was 16. Like many young African-American musicians, our primary influences were soul and funk music. This changed after seeing Iggy And The Stooges live. We started listening to more rock, stuff like Alice Cooper and Led Zeppelin. When the Who's Quadrophenia came out, David became convinced that nothing was more important than rock and roll. In 1974, we put together a demo tape with the most rocking name we could think of: DEATH.

What happened?
