In which I yell at Erica Jong.

Dear Erica Jong,
For inflicting this badly written, ignorant and trite tripe upon the masses

Because, (for the last time) not everyone who votes for Obama is a misogynist, sexist asshole who just hate, hate, HATE teh idea of wimmen in power. (In fact there are legitimate reasons that people don't want to vote for her. I know its hard for you to take in, but really, there are.)
Because Barack Obama has a fucking website, same as Clinton, on which his policies are clearly spelt out. You are familiar with the internetz, aren't you? Use it. Also, you might want to listen to his speeches. And his debates. Just a thought.
Because Oprah and other black women have a brain as well as womanly bits. And, surprise, surprise, they actually pay attention to policy using said brain. I know, right? Who knew black women were supposed to be intelligent? Who knew black people on a whole were supposed to be intelligent? They just vote for the black guy cause he's black. (Wonder what criteria black people used to vote in other elections?)
Because my irony meter is overloading at the fact that while you are accusing people of using racial politics, you are advocating gender politics. Uh huh..
Because electing a woman is not a guarantee that women's concerns will be addressed. (See Arroyo, Bhutto, Thatcher and others).
Because its very rich of you and your other friends to be talking about Obamaniacs and referring to his supporters as cultists, when the Democratic Party has a frigging shrine built to John F. Kennedy, and the reason you all liked him so much was that he was young, handsome, and gave bloody good speeches that inspired people!
Because while you are there recounting the history of white and Jewish feminists and wallowing self-righteously in their martyrdom, you forgot someone. You forgot several someones. You know, THE BLACK FEMINISTS AND ALLIES! Like Sojourner Truth. Like Frederick Douglass. Like Ida B. Wells. Like Claudia Jones. You forgot their trials, their tribulations, their problems. And then, trying to curry favour with Black American women and disguise your racism, you bring up this hypothetical example of the "Black Woman Cndidate". But again, you forgot someone. Remember a lady named Shirley Chisholm in 1972?, The first black woman to run for President? Then again,not a whole lot of you feminists supported her, so of course, you may have all forgotten. *shrugs* It happens. Of course, you also forgot the back-stabbing and the racism, and the stealing of ideas and stamping them as your own and the exploitation (and did I mention the racism?) that you all got on with every step of those years from that very first meeting at Seneca Falls. Uh huh. It ain't me who needs to learn the history, dear heart.
The good thing is, your influence is waning. So are the influences of those like you. Pretty soon you will be totally irrelevant. Bit by bit, we, the new generation, have been making strides. It's been a hard, long road. It will be long and hard ahead. However, we'll stand tall. We'll beat it. And no amount of whining from you and your allies will stop us.
I forgot to credit the macro. All hail

Date: 2008-02-14 09:39 pm (UTC)Something amused me though; she said something about how "history starts with Britney and ends with Paris" and I was sitting there going "Brittany to Paris? What the fuck? How did we go from the current US Presidential election to French history?" before I realized she was talking about popular culture instead. ^_^;;
Anyways, thank you for posting this, especially because I've been scolded for being an Obama supporter. Apparently in some people's minds it *does* automatically make me a misogynist...
