It's sort of surreal that, oh, 12 years ago I was totally reactionary about the gay stuff. Though thanks to the internet, I've known some gay people for a few years. My gut reaction is getting close to neutral now, finally. Luckily, when I found out that my high school ex is a lesbian last year, I was sufficiently desensitized to be thoroughly unshocked.
The internet certainly played a big role in opening my horizons, I'll admit. Before I was all "civil rights for everyone!", but I didn't know much about stuff. Then I found fanfiction, and then started researching, and the rest is history.:)
*snort* Blame my parents. Although they have a few old fashioned ideas themselves, they managed to bring me up in a sufficiently open-minded manner. Add the internet to that...and Voila!
Hmmmm. My parents are pretty moderate, but terminally apolitical. I probably got more of my reactionary tendencies from our pastor and from my own dominant manifest destiny genes than from them. Or maybe a little from them. Or I might just be a jerk. It's tricky sorting it out, and I've forgotten a lot.
