In our new post racial america, white lady calls cops on black professor having trouble opening his 200 year old house's door. Cops arrests man after he identifies himself as home owner because he is being too "loud and tumultous" I proceed to hate the world a little bit more. Especially because various commenters seem to believe that the cops are entitled to arrest anyone who argues with them. Remind me again about democracy and free speech? And how the United States is the freest country in the world?

In the meantime, Ms. Maddow was pissed enough at racist jackass Pat Buchannan, to do some fact checking of his recent appearance on her show:

If I live to be a hundred, this ish with Gates is never going to not be on my list of Shitty Post Racial Shenanigans.

Um, they'd be nice?

*crickets*

Yeah, I can't even pretend that's what we've got going on.

Thanks for the Maddow clip. I'd been surprised that these things passed without comment when Buchanan was there; I'm glad to see her not letting them pass wholly without remark.

He apparently yelled over her when she tried to take him on. Its one of the things that I hate that talk radio and tele have gone down to, when conservatives refuse to listen to arguments and just yell over the arguee. Its why I love Al Jazeera. Civilized discussion is the norm, even when the viewpoints are far apart.

I feel like the term "excessive force" has fallen by the wayside and a lot of people forget what it means and how unlawful it is (or should be). Just because someone's argumentative (which is a totally subjective thing, by the way) or loud (uh, what?) doesn't automatically mean you arrest them. Like how, just because someone's being a pain in the ass or resisting arrest doesn't automatically mean you tase or shoot them.

And by "doesn't" I mean "shouldn't." I know police are just making excuses, but they're such pisspoor ones and it's frustrating that so many (white) people back them up.

No hay palabaras para eso...

Sometimes all you can do is witness, and have faith that more and more ppl see this stuff, even when the energia isn't there to speak up.

Saying "democracy and free speech" and "America" in the same sentence seems bizarre and otherworldly. Props to you and Maddow for giving voice to these points.

Oh yeah, I'm officially back. No way I can let you fight this BS alone.

As for Professor Gates, I will say what I have said everywhere: this lawsuit is going to be sweet. Even though they've dropped the charges.

I hope he uses all those resources that no one else has to fuck the city right up. Not least because I've seen a commenter at either sparkymonster or hari_mirchi's saying that she works in the PD's office and this will help them on the ground in making this defense when it happens, which it does, often. And they've done some jiggerypokery to deny people in Cambridge with disorderly charges the services of the PD's office, to get more convictions. Faugh.
