At my job now, the price of education in the UK is a big issue. Well, it's in the news a lot too--they are considering raising tuition fees--& I just... augh. I hear the economic reasons people give for it, & I just think... no. Don't make it like the US. I had a friend who kind of coerced his parents into selling their house in order to pay for my friend's preferred college. My dream school was Bryn Mawr & I got in but couldn't afford it. And I looked the other day at their tuition rates & it's THIRTY SEVEN THOUSAND DOLLARS a year. They estimate the cost of going there for a year including housing etc. to be over $50,000. Who the fuck can afford that????

Sarah Lawrence is 53,000 a year. And they are in financial trouble. And I wonder what in the HELL are they teaching there. Seriously. What exactly justifies these ridiculous prices? And why oh why is this not at the top of the political agenda? You know, instead of war with other people's countries?

That’s one of the scary parts about putting in my college app recently…I have no idea how I’m going to afford even two years of schooling, much less the 4-6 years that getting the kind of degrees I am looking at would take. UWM cost are not near as bad as some places, but they seem to up every couple of years. I did put in for FA, but no telling what is even available nowadays.

this is a MASSIVE sticking point between me and the capitalist and I suspect one day it will lead to my getting screaming angry. there is not only NO meritocracy, but NO HOPE FOR meritocracy, as long as school is a commodity accessed according to one's socioeconomic situation. and people with money have a lot of ideas about scholarships and financial aid and how magically equalizing it is. I shouldn't have to explain to someone with a degree from a prestigious institution how his access to private preschools and tutors and expensive extracurricular activities and educational trips and toys and encouragement have as much to do with where he went to school as the ability to actually pay the bills did. there can be NO level playing field as long as you have to buy a competitive education and the fact that there are people who believe otherwise BLOWS MY MIND. I just cannot even talk about this shit...

I swear to you that the next time I hear someone going "oh work hard and you will succeed its the American way," I will commit verbal violence. That is such bullshit I cant even explain. And you know what is pissing me off about that article? Apparently it would take 80 billion a year to provide free public college education. 8o billion dollars. But I can just hear the concerned Republican backed by their elite media mouthpieces...
