I saw a few talking heads on CNN or MSNBC a week back talking about this and saying, flat-out, "We don't approve of bailing out the car companies, because they're going to honor those pensions."

My jaw doesn't actually drop that often. I can't even believe what obvious bullshit this is and how foolish Americans are. My dad brought this up on the phone the other night, the whole Fox News party line. OMG, they're dinosaurs, they can't produce fuel-efficient vehicles* (I love how all of a sudden conservatives are all about the environment in this tiny context, only, sort of the way they were all yelling "sexism" a month or so back, but only about Palin.), their cars suck, and mostly they pay Americans real money and have to deal with unions.

My dad's bought American cars my entire life, and his next one will probably be a Ford or Chevy, too. He makes a point of it. But for now, he's all anti-American cars. In this tiny context only.

*I brought up the fact that all of them made electric cars that worked just great in California when they were compelled to, and that the GOP leaned on the state to kill that. He ignored it.

They're just not thinking. It's one of the key American ailments, and you don't even have to be a commie or anything to recognize this: the wealthy and the powerful in this nation have been very successful in compelling poor and working class Americans to ignore their own interests and focus instead on the invented woes of the very rich and the biggest corporations.

It's insane, but as I've said before, if you want to hear a long and passionate justification for getting rid of estate taxes, just ask a poorer American who's never going to be in any danger of receiving an inheritance about it.
