This is frigging horrifying.
Fun part of the transcript.
FAIL.
Fun part of the transcript.
Couric: You've said, quote, "John McCain will reform the way Wall Street does business." Other than supporting stricter regulations of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac two years ago, can you give us any more example of his leading the charge for more oversight?
Palin: I think that the example that you just cited, with his warnings two years ago about Fannie and Freddie - that, that's paramount. That's more than a heck of a lot of other senators and representatives did for us.
Couric: But he's been in Congress for 26 years. He's been chairman of the powerful Commerce Committee. And he has almost always sided with less regulation, not more.
Palin: He's also known as the maverick though, taking shots from his own party, and certainly taking shots from the other party. Trying to get people to understand what he's been talking about - the need to reform government.
Couric: But can you give me any other concrete examples? Because I know you've said Barack Obama is a lot of talk and no action. Can you give me any other examples in his 26 years of John McCain truly taking a stand on this?
Palin: I can give you examples of things that John McCain has done, that has shown his foresight, his pragmatism, and his leadership abilities. And that is what America needs today.
Couric: I'm just going to ask you one more time - not to belabor the point. Specific examples in his 26 years of pushing for more regulation.
Palin: I'll try to find you some and I'll bring them to you.
FAIL.

Of COURSE the Democrats caved. Its what they do.
Daily Kos says primary challenge. Looks like the Republicans are being pressed as well. Good
And yes, I do realize that Obama is NOT a progressive. Problem is, McCain is simply not Pres. material. AT ALL. So, choice between bad and fucking insane.

Gitmo prosecutor resigns because has resigned in protest because the prosecution team was not providing the defense evidence that could indicate Jawad’s innocence.
Back to Africa, or, its the minorities fault!
Yes, Virgina, there is a foreign policy debate on Friday. And we need it, cause the US foreign policy is a right debacle. What with Pakistan (our ally on the war on terror) shooting at our helicopters and Taliban resurgence in Afghanistan and Russia being extremely pissed and... Let's just say that we are going to hell without a handbasket. And leave it at that.
By the way, I ignored this. See Georgian War links to get up to speed.

Where is their patriotism? WHY ARE THEY FOISTING THIS CLEARLY UNDERQUALIFIED WOMAN ON AMERICA AS A VP CANDIDATE??? WHY???
COURIC: You've cited Alaska's proximity to Russia as part of your foreign policy experience. What did you mean by that? PALIN: That Alaska has a very narrow maritime border between a foreign country, Russia, and on our other side, the land-- boundary that we have with-- Canada. It-- it's funny that a comment like that was-- kind of made to-- cari-- I don't know, you know? Reporters--
COURIC: Mock?
PALIN: Yeah, mocked, I guess that's the word, yeah.
COURIC: Explain to me why that enhances your foreign policy credentials.
PALIN: Well, it certainly does because our-- our next door neighbors are foreign countries. They're in the state that I am the executive of. And there in Russia--
COURIC: Have you ever been involved with any negotiations, for example, with the Russians?
PALIN: We have trade missions back and forth. We-- we do-- it's very important when you consider even national security issues with Russia as Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where-- where do they go? It's Alaska. It's just right over the border. It is-- from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because they are right there. They are right next to-- to our state.

Planned Parenthood is suddenly a lot richer because of Sarah Palin.
And the Republican vice presidential nominee will soon be receiving tens of thousands of thank-you notes.
A three-week-old Internet campaign is asking abortion-rights activists to send donations to Planned Parenthood in honor of the Alaska governor.
The origin of the campaign is unknown and Planned Parenthood officials insist it is not their doing.
Palin is a staunch abortion- rights opponent. The campaign is meant to translate anger at her position into money for an agency that provides sex education, women's health care and abortion services.
...
Katie Groke Ellis, field manager for the Planned Parenthood of the Rockies Action Fund, predicts that the five-state chapter of the group alone could draw $100,000 in donations.
"We are so excited to see that people are writing checks to us instead of just complaining about it," Ellis said Tuesday.
...
Planned Parenthood sends a handwritten thank-you card to the donor. If a donation is made in someone's name, he or she gets one, too.
In this case, the Palin cards will go to Republican presidential nominee John McCain's national headquarters.
Only the Democrats would allow the Republicans to win politically on this issue.

House Republicans say they have significant leverage on the revamped bailout package, claiming that Democrats will scramble for votes unless they make changes to it.
Republicans in the lower chamber are balking at the bailout package, saying that Democrats will be solely responsible for the ramifications of what they see as a flawed compromise.

But while you were not looking a 25 billion dollar giveaway to the auto industry passed the house, and actual free-market democracies are pissed:
Vai: Balloon Juice.
BEIJING, Sept 25 (Reuters) - Chinese regulators have told domestic banks to stop interbank lending to U.S. financial institutions to prevent possible losses during the financial crisis, the South China Morning Post reported on Thursday.
The Hong Kong newspaper cited unidentified industry sources as saying the instruction from the China Banking Regulatory Commission (CBRC) applied to interbank lending of all currencies to U.S. banks but not to banks from other countries.MORE

The German auto industry attacked U.S. politicians on Thursday over plans to give $25 billion in low-interest loans to Detroit’s crisis-stricken carmakers. “We are opponents of subsidy contests,” the head of the VDA automotive industry association, Matthias Wissmann, said during the IAA truck show in Hanover.
The chief executive of German heavy truckmaker MAN Commercial Vehicles , Anton Weinmann, said:
“That results in a distortion of competition…In the manufacturing industry, one should leave things to the free market.”

JPMorgan to Buy WaMu Operations
( Why the rest of the world won't help with the bailout, we've already spent 800 billion in bailing out Wall Street on the cut )
The Financial Times is (rightly) worried:
Banks are not to be trusted. This is not just the view of the public and policymakers, but that of the banks themselves.
And indeed, the most notable thing over the past year has been the general mistrust amongst banks, and their reluctance to lend to one another. This graph shows a direct indicator of the level of defiance between banks.
Banks are hoarding all the cash they can (avoiding new deals, not renewing facilities that come to an end and would in normal times be extended, and now even trying to find legal - if not necessarily very proper - ways to sneak out of existing commitments), both because they need it for their own basic needs, and because they simply don't trust the risk represented by other banks.
And given that at any time a bank makes a loan to a customer (at least for big corporate deals), it borrows the same amount of money on the markets, the fact that the interbank market, ie where that borrowing part takes place, is frozen can makes it difficult for banks to continue with the lending.MORE

Sep. 25th, 2008 09:12 pmLousiana Lawmaker Faults Media For Focusing Attention On His Eugenics Proposal
fightingwordsgives some background
Womanist Musings slams it head on.
Louisiana State Rep. John LaBruzzo (R) recently stirred controversy by advocating a form of eugenics to decrease the number of poor. “I realized that all these people were in Louisiana’s care and what a massive financial responsibility that is to the state,” he said. “I said, ‘I wonder if it might be a good idea to pay some of these people to get sterilized.’” His plan would also give tax incentives to the rich to encourage procreation.
...
LaBruzzo seems to be dead serious about implementing the plan. He “gathering statistics” now and is planning to introduce legislation “if he finds that the number of people on welfare has increased” over the past decades.MORE

If you don't know about the history of how reproductive rights have differed for white women and women of color, it's because you haven't been informed. I'll be a peach and give you a few links to places you can get information:
La Operación is a documentary about the enforced sterilization of 1/3 of the women in Puerto Rico.
Killing the Black Body and Medical Apartheid both discuss the history of medical racism and in particular address how that has affected black women and their reproductive health and rights.
Reprise/Forced Sterilizations is a paper about the forced sterilizations of Native women in the 1970s.
What is common amongst all of these is the silence of the mainstream reproductive rights movement--or complicity of same. That no mainstream pro-choice organization has spoken to LaBruzzo's proposal says a lot about where their priorities lie.
Womanist Musings slams it head on.
Rep. LaBruzzo has discovered how to end economic disparity. The answer that we have all been waiting on is...drum roll please....paying poor people to undergo sterilization. An old fashioned idea to an ever increasing crises. Do you smell the stink of white fear?
Eugenicists have historically argued that it is the poor, disabled, defective and bodies of colour that are stagnating the growth of the country. With an economic crises looming can we really afford to keep supporting those that wish to spend a lifetime sucking on the government teat?
Remember that the current housing crises is the result of people who could not afford to pay for their mortgages. When you try to give the poor a helping hand they always fall back on old habits and shirk responsibilities. The liberal media would have you believe that it is the banking institutions themselves that are at fault for being blinded by greed, but seriously everyone knows that banks only have the interest of the common man at heart.
What Labruzzo and men of his ilk want people to believe is the lie that is preached in every single elementary school across the country; meritocracy. The streets are paved with gold, and if you work hard enough each person has an equal opportunity to succeed. If people are poor it is because they choose it and this is a choice that the government can no longer continue to support. MORE
