Slate Magazine summarizes

The New York Times, Washington Post, and Los Angeles Times lead with, and the Wall Street Journal devotes most of its front-page real estate to, the Sunday that shook up Wall Street. The LAT and WSJ announce the news with banner headlines this morning, and the Journal doesn't mince words: "Crisis on Wall Street." The fast-moving story has several parts to it, but here's the gist: Lehman Bros. will file for bankruptcy, Merrill Lynch agreed to be sold to Bank of America, and insurance giant American International Group could be the next big casualty of the global credit crisis. In an effort to prevent more trouble, the Fed announced it would make it easier for securities firms to borrow money, and 10 big banks agreed to create a $70 billion fund that any of them could access if they find themselves in desperate need of cash. The WP says that the American financial system "faced its gravest crisis in modern times" this weekend.

...

The NYT says Sunday was "one of the most dramatic days in Wall Street's history" that will "reshape the landscape of American finance." The WSJ agrees and notes that the "American financial system was shaken to its core" yesterday, an assessment that is easily backed up by all the panicked statements from Wall Street insiders, who are bracing for bad news when the markets open today. "These are the most extraordinary events I've ever seen," said the co-founder of the private equity firm the Blackstone Group. "We are in a hysteria," a banking analyst tells USAT. "This is frightening as hell," another analyst summarizes to the LAT.

John McCain responds that :
We will never put America in this position again. We will clean up Wall Street. This is a failure.

Naturally, he ignores the fact that his main econ. adviser, Phil Gramm, helped engineer this mess )

As in...tell the fucking truth.

According to Candy Crowley, she can't make the call as to who between John McCain and Barack Obama, is the bigger liar

I see. Tell me, what IS the job of journalists these days? Is it to simply repeat whatever the campaigns, specifically the Republicans, tell them? Cause if it is, then they really aren't journalists. JOURNALISTS are supposed to find out the truth. But if all that you are doing is simply bending over backwards to be "balanced", so much so that you are distorting "reality", then what you are is not a news station. You are...a propaganda station.

or so says John McCain

First, consider the fact that in Wasilla, as Mayor, Palin made Rape victims pay for their own rape kits

And yes, we mean SHE knew about and sanctioned it.

Checking the budget confirmed former Chief Stambaugh's claim. He had included a contingency of $15,000 in his budget for the department's 1st year of existence (1993-1994), $5,000 for 1994-1995 and 1995-1996, and $13,000 for his final year as police chief in 1996-1997, spending $11,625.
Duwayne Charles Fannon, his replacement,[hired by Palin after she fired Stambaugh for insufficient loyalty] halved the budget request in 1997-1998, with a request of $7,298, spending $3,454. However, it seems he began the "victim pays" policy in the 1998-1999 fiscal year. That year, he requested $3,000 but spent only $205. This data can be found in the Document Central section of Wasilla's website.
The Document for the 1998-1999 fiscal year begins with a message "To the Citizens of the City of Wasilla:"
The comprehensive annual financial report of the City of Wasilla for the fiscal year ended June 30, 1999, is hereby submitted. The City's Finance Department prepared the report. Responsibility for both the accuracy of the data, and the completeness and fairness of the presentation, including all disclosures, rests with the City. To the best of our knowledge and belief, the enclosed data is accurate in all material respects and is reported in a manner designed to fairly present the financial position and results of operations of the various funds and account groups of the City. All disclosures necessary to enable the reader to gain an understanding of the City's financial activities have been included. ...

Therefore, its no surprise that in the face of these stats:

From: Shakesville

So, Alaska has a pretty serious sexual assault and domestic violence problem.

How serious? "Alaska leads the nation in reported forcible rapes per capita, according to the FBI, with a rate two and a half times the national average—a ranking it has held for many years."

How serious? "The rate of Alaskan women being killed by a partner is 1.5 times the national average. … Alaska has 6 times the national average of reported child sexual assault."

How serious? "74.7% [of Alaskans] have experienced or know someone who has experienced domestic violence or sexual assault."

How serious? So serious that the state has had to pass a specific law to require that "all assaults involving strangulation or suffocation will be prosecuted as felonies" because many cases were being tried as misdemeanors. Ya know, because strangulation is, like, so run of the mill shit.

Blink.

So why is it, do you think, that "Despite the governor's pro-family image, public safety experts and advocates for women and children struggled when asked to explain how Palin's leadership has helped address the crisis" and why is it that "an ambitious, multi-million-dollar initiative to seriously tackle sex crimes in the state" was put on hold in July by Palin's office?
That in defending the firing of Walt Mohegan in the ongoing Troopergate saga, they would use the following excuse:

Walter Monegan was fired for asking for more money to fight sexual assault )

Bigots.

Couple fight gender-neutral language in wedding license
Last month, Rachel Bird exchanged vows with Gideon Codding in a church wedding in front of family and friends. As far as Bird is concerned, she is a bride.

To the state of California, however, she is either "Party A" or "Party B."

Those are the terms that have replaced "bride" and "groom" on the state's new gender-neutral marriage licenses. And to Bird and Codding, that is unacceptable.
"We are traditionalists – we just want to be called bride and groom," said Bird, 25, who works part time for her father's church. "Those words have been used for generations and now they just changed them."

...

Bird and Codding have refused to complete the new forms, a stand that has already cost them. Because their marriage is not registered with the state, Bird cannot sign up for Codding's medical benefits or legally take his name. They are now exploring their options, she said.

Bird's father, Doug Bird, pastor of Roseville's Abundant Life Fellowship, said he is urging couples not to sign the new marriage forms, and that he is getting some support from congregants and colleagues at local churches.

"I would encourage you to refuse to sign marriage licenses with 'Party A' and 'Party B,' " he wrote in a letter that he sent to them. "If ever there was a time for the people of the United States to stand up and let their voices be heard – this is that time."

...

And Rachel Bird described her position as "personal – not religious."

...

"We just feel that our rights have been violated," she said

I didn't realise that we had the right to oppress other people. I'll keep that in mind, though.

a bathtub. Deregulate, deregulate, deregulate, and let the market decide! Until your greedy chickens come home to roost, that is. Then

Federal Gov't the world's largest housing company: AIG sells 79.9% itself to Federal Government, for 85 billion dollars

Privatize the profits, socialize the losses. And remember kids, regulations to prevent this kind of shit? Are ALWAYS bad. And we ALWAYS need less government.

EDIT: This is the bottomline
Reinstate the Glass-Staegall Act and break up Financial Conglomerates, so thatthere are less businesses that get too large to fail. )
