Burnt Orange Report:
Early voting starts today in Texas. In Waller County, a primarily rural county about 60 miles outside Houston, the county made the decision to offer only one early voting location: at the County Courthouse in Hempstead, TX, the county seat.
Prairie View A&M students organized to protest the decision, because they felt it hindered their ability to vote. For background, Prairie View A&M is one of Texas’ historically Black universities. It has a very different demographic feel than the rest of the county. There has been a long history of dispute over what the students feel is disenfranchisement. There was a lot of outrage in 2006, when students felt they were unfairly denied the right to vote when their registrations somehow did not get processed.
According to an article in today’s Houston Chronicle:
Waller County has faced numerous lawsuits involving voting rights in the past 30 years and remains under investigation by the Texas Attorney General’s Office based on complaints by local black leaders. Those allegations, concerning the November 2006 general election, related to voting machine failures, inadequate staffing and long delays for voting results.
The article adds,
“I was angry after registering to vote in the 2006 election only to be turned away at the voting booth,” said sophomore Dee Dee Williams.
So what are the students doing?
1000 students, along with an additional 1000 friends and supporters, are this morning walking the 7.3 miles between Prairie View and Hempstead in order to vote today. According to the piece I saw on the news (there’s no video up, so I can’t link to it), the students plan to all vote today. There are only 2 machines available at the courthouse for early voting, so they hope to tie them up all day and into the night.
I love stories like this. In the face of an obvious ploy to suppress the vote, these young people stood up for their rights and showed that they will not be cowed. Republicans should be worried, because this is a committed electorate. Crooks and liars

And ya'll wonder why Michelle Obama said that this was the first time she was really proud of her country.Ya'll KNOW what's up. Ya'll KNOW what the fuck is up. So don't fucking play. Don't try to pull the hypocrisy. CAUSE WE SEE THROUGH IT! AND WE WON'T TAKE IT NO MORE!!!WOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

From: Connecticut Lawmaker Becomes First Out Black LGBT Legislator 2008_02_20_bartlett
Jason Bartlett, a Connecticut state representative, announced he is gay and becomes the first openly gay black state legislator in the nation. The 41-year-old Democrat says he has been "open about his sexuality with his family" and decided "now was the right time" to make it public. "For me, the decision came down to, Why not now?" the legislator said in the interview with the Danbury News-Times. (Plus video interview) "To me, this is about having a conversation with my larger family—the people of greater Danbury who voted for me."

OUT Profiles Gay Youth in Savannah

2008_02_14_outsavannah2
The new issue of OUT includes a bittersweet 10-page editorial on gay youth in Savannah, Georgia. It's also available as a slideshow at Out,com. Savannah is truly one of the most beautiful cities in this country (see: Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil) and the editorial also includes some of the city's exquisite architecture
The facade is misleading. "Despite all it's relative progressiveness—Savannah is home to two art schools, a Marc Jacobs boutique, and an American Apparel store—[photographer Danielle] Levitt found the city's response to cultural shifts in sexual identity a bit dated," the article explains. " 'I assumed that I could troll the streets or search the Internet and find an abundance of queer kids. I quickly realized that, in fact, tradition has a stronghold on its inhabitants, and that Savannah's process of coming out is a slow one.' "
Nineteen year-old Christian (l) and 17-year-old La-Shé are a couple. "When I moved here last month," Christian tells the magazine. "I gave up on hiding and decided to totally come out of the closet. Pretty much parents have accepted me, but my parents have no idea that I've come out like I have."
"I didn't come out until a couple of weeks before Christian moved here last month," La-Shé says. "He's my first boyfriend, even though I realized in seventh grade I was gay. My mom thinks my [homosexuality] is a phase and it's easier to be out at school than at home."

"The Adventure" Angels and Airwaves

"Do it for me now" Angels and Airwaves

Can't stand Blink 182 except for "Miss you". And I didn't really want to like AVA. But, they're pretty good. My fav. vid by them is "The Adventure" because in the last screen there are two suns in the sky. Reminds me of the old time 1970s science fiction stories...
