Liar cover changed for paperback edition

New Liar Cover I am still pissed. That hair is not nappy and the girl is lighter skinned than in the book, but...at least she is actually fucking black now? Fuck this shit to hell. I am tired of saying "at least".

Anyway, go buy the book please. Its supposed to be a good read, and we need to prove their fucked up perceptions wrong so that we can force them to actually get it right sometime in the future.

It's better....eh. MY STANDARDS ARE SO LOW

As [livejournal.com profile] misadventurelad said not all black women are shades of honey.

Will still buy it to support the improved cover but meh.

you know something. I went natural a couple of years ago. Cut my hair off was wearing it in a TWA for 3 years. Then I got bored and started growing it. And. I have never seen on a book cover, in all my years of searching, someone who looked like me. TWA. Brownskinned like your icon I think. Of course, darkskinned like other family members don't make the cut with long processed hair, much less nappy like mine. And I am SICK. Of the only time we see people like that itas exotic models. To add spice. As if we dont exist ion real life. Ordinary. Beautiful. And when our stories are told, fucking worthy of being on our own goddamned covers!!!

[identity profile] bana05.livejournal.com 2009-08-06 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, hi the cover it should've been in the first place. How are you?

is it too cynical for me to think if the author had been black the cover would've remained what it was?

[identity profile] unusualmusic.livejournal.com 2009-08-07 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
nope. not cynical at all.

[identity profile] bana05.livejournal.com 2009-08-07 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
cool. Just checking.

[identity profile] hari-mirchi.livejournal.com 2009-08-07 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Cynical ain't necessarily a bad thing.

I am also not impressed with the possibly Latino Neal Shusterman and cultural appropriation and DISRESPECT of Dreadlocks.

I am from a middle class family. Where people who wore dreadlocks were considered nasty naggers (pronounced neigh-gers). Who could go to prison, not get a job, be discriminated against by every body else, whites dividing and conquering by infecting the rest of us with hatred for the "nasty hair" which my dad still maintained until recently, and probably even now, is not properly washed. For following their religion. Which was, of course, opposed to white colonialist bullshit. I was not too happy with the idea of just seeing it as a style, though I am getting more comfortable when it is worn by african descended peoples. I didn't know the Hindus wore it as well. Thats fine. But white people? After all the damage that they have done? Need to take their rapacious hands OFF THAT HAIRSTYLE.

hold on. shusterman is of color? really? Between the fuckery about "unstyled" dreadlocks and this, we are gonna need to have a talk about this, aren't we? And when we're done we're gonna need to sit the illustrator down as well. And the publisher. Cause I am DONE giving allowances.

FYI, it's not for the paperback edition. It's for the hardcover edition coming out this October.

[identity profile] unusualmusic.livejournal.com 2009-08-07 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
oh. thanks for the correction.

[identity profile] miaryann.livejournal.com 2009-08-07 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Getting it.
Also looks like a great addition for classroom library. I have a huge collection of recent YA going, and if I don't go back in the classroom I'm going to donate them to a friend's English/language arts classroom.

Actually dreadlocks are basically the oldest hair style in the world and can be found in every race and were quite popular with Celts and Scandinavians (think WASP). They're not really something we can claim as only ours, our only thing is nappy. Even the mummy Tutankhamun had dreadlocks and he wasn't even black.

Dear Anonymous DET

It's highly unlikely you will be checking back to see this, but I still felt the need to point out that the Scandinavians and the Celts were not calling their hair dreadlocks. That term was specifically applied by white colonials to black Jamaicans, specifically Rastafarians.

Thus the term dreadlocks has political, anti-colonial meaning, associated with false imprisonment, police brutality, black, dark brown skin and racism.

People with no clue about that, need to step the hell back from using the name in their colour-free and institutional racism free, majority white fantasies - as a sign of exotic other.

I am glad that you clarified that even if anon doesn't check back.

I was going to say that she still looks rather light of skin. :/

[identity profile] unusualmusic.livejournal.com 2009-08-10 02:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah. You know you can't have no model looking too ethnic on the cover!
