Repost

Let America Be America Again
by Langston Hughes (poets.org)

Let America be America again.
Let it be the dream it used to be.
Let it be the pioneer on the plain
Seeking a home where he himself is free.

(America never was America to me.)

Let America be the dream the dreamers dreamed–
Let it be that great strong land of love
Where never kings connive nor tyrants scheme
That any man be crushed by one above.

(It never was America to me.)

O, let my land be a land where Liberty
Is crowned with no false patriotic wreath,
But opportunity is real, and life is free,
Equality is in the air we breathe.

(There’s never been equality for me,
Nor freedom in this “homeland of the free.”)

Say, who are you that mumbles in the dark?
And who are you that draws your veil across the stars?

I am the poor white, fooled and pushed apart,
I am the Negro bearing slavery’s scars.
I am the red man driven from the land,
I am the immigrant clutching the hope I seek–
And finding only the same old stupid plan
Of dog eat dog, of mighty crush the weak.

I am the young man, full of strength and hope,
Tangled in that ancient endless chain
Of profit, power, gain, of grab the land!
Of grab the gold! Of grab the ways of satisfying need!
Of work the men! Of take the pay!
Of owning everything for one’s own greed!

I am the farmer, bondsman to the soil.
I am the worker sold to the machine.
I am the Negro, servant to you all.
I am the people, humble, hungry, mean–
Hungry yet today despite the dream.
Beaten yet today–O, Pioneers!
I am the man who never got ahead,
The poorest worker bartered through the years.

Yet I’m the one who dreamt our basic dream
In the Old World while still a serf of kings,
Who dreamt a dream so strong, so brave, so true,
That even yet its mighty daring sings
In every brick and stone, in every furrow turned
That’s made America the land it has become.
O, I’m the man who sailed those early seas
In search of what I meant to be my home–
For I’m the one who left dark Ireland’s shore,
And Poland’s plain, and England’s grassy lea,
And torn from Black Africa’s strand I came
To build a “homeland of the free.”

The free?

Who said the free? Not me?
Surely not me? The millions on relief today?
The millions shot down when we strike?
The millions who have nothing for our pay?
For all the dreams we’ve dreamed
And all the songs we’ve sung
And all the hopes we’ve held
And all the flags we’ve hung,
The millions who have nothing for our pay–
Except the dream that’s almost dead today.

O, let America be America again–
The land that never has been yet–
And yet must be–the land where every man is free.
The land that’s mine–the poor man’s, Indian’s, Negro’s, ME–
Who made America,
Whose sweat and blood, whose faith and pain,
Whose hand at the foundry, whose plow in the rain,
Must bring back our mighty dream again.

Sure, call me any ugly name you choose–
The steel of freedom does not stain.
From those who live like leeches on the people’s lives,
We must take back our land again,
America!

O, yes,
I say it plain,
America never was America to me,
And yet I swear this oath–
America will be!

Out of the rack and ruin of our gangster death,
The rape and rot of graft, and stealth, and lies,
We, the people, must redeem
The land, the mines, the plants, the rivers.
The mountains and the endless plain–
All, all the stretch of these great green states–
And make America again!

Horrors!!! Black Ppl are VOTING!!!!!

Funny how the fringe lunatics seem to be in positions of power in the Republican party

There are days in Florida when you feel like you are living in the 19th Century. Here is part of the text of an e-mail sent by the Chairman of the Hillsborough Republican Party (this is county that contains Tampa).

THE THREAT:
HERE IN TEMPLE TERRACE, FL OUR REPUBLICAN HQ IS ONE BLOCK AWAY FROM OUR LIBRARY, WHICH IS AN EARLY VOTING SITE.
I SEE CARLOADS OF BLACK OBAMA SUPPORTERS COMING FROM THE INNER CITY TO CAST THEIR VOTES FOR OBAMA. THIS IS THEIR CHANCE TO GET A BLACK PRESIDENT AND THEY SEEM TO CARE LITTLE THAT HE IS AT MINIMUM, SOCIALIST, AND PROBABLY MARXIST IN HIS CORE BELIEFS. AFTER ALL, HE IS BLACK--NO EXPERIENCE OR ACCOMPLISHMENTS--BUT HE IS BLACK.
I ALSO SEE YOUNG COLLEGE STUDENTS AND THEIR PROFESSORS FROM USF PARKING THEIR CARS WITH THE PROMINENT 'OBAMA' BUMPER STICKERS. THE STUDENTS ARE ENTHUSIASTIC TO BE VOTING IN A HISTORIC ELECTION WHERE THERE MAY BE THE FIRST BLACK PRESIDENT.

...

As Republicans always do, the first reaction for the Head of the Republican Party in what many regard as the key county in Florida, David Storck, was to suggest that its release was attempt to "sabotage the Republican Party."I love his initial reaction – attack. He sent the e-mail, but his first reaction after forwarding the e-mail is to actually try and play the victim. Later he issued this absurd non-apology:

I can certainly understand how the e-mail could be misunderstood. I should never have forwarded that message and sincerely apologize for sending it and to anyone that my action has offended

colour of change go!vote!

Why Would Anyone Want to Stop You From Voting?

5 Ways to Protect Your Vote

If there's one thing we see every election, it's that Republicans will try to manipulate the rules any way they can to prevent some people from voting. Don't be discouraged--be prepared. If we're armed with the right information, we can beat most of these dirty tricks.
  1. Be Prepared, and Conquer the Lines. We can't let long lines stop anyone from voting. There are several ways you can reduce lines and make sure they don't prevent you or anyone else from voting:
    • Vote early if you can. You can find early voting times and locations at govote.org.
    • Double-check your polling location before you go to vote. You can look it up at govote.org.
    • Have a Plan & Have Fun. Have a plan in case there are lines. Bring some food, drinks, friends, books, games, a chair -- anything that will prevent you and other voters from walking away. Have fun while you wait and encourage your friends and neighbors to stay in line so their vote is counted.
    • Don't give up--don't walk away without voting.
  2. Two numbers you should have in your phone. Put these numbers in your phone so you're prepared to report problems and help other voters find their polling place:
    • 866-OUR-VOTE is a hotline that's been set up to collect information about problems on election day--lawyers and election protection advocates are ready to respond. It's the best way to make sure someone addresses any problems you see.
    • The number for your local election board--in case you need to tell someone where they can vote. Enter you zip code at govote.org, then look for "Contact [your county] election officials" on the right.
  3. Beware of lies, misinformation and dirty tricks; spread the truth.
Republican operatives are spreading plain lies to frighten new voters. In Philadelphia, anonymous flyers in Black neighborhoods have falsely claimed that voters with unpaid traffic tickets or outstanding warrants will be arrested at the polls. If you hear a scary rumor, it's probably a lie. Call your local election officials to check it out--and make sure your friends and neighbors know the truth.
  4. Leave the Obama gear at home.
In some places, you won't be allowed into the polling place if you're wearing clothes and pins that support a given candidate. This isn't true everywhere, but it's best to play it safe. You can contact your local board of elections to find out if it's a problem in your area. If it is, bring some extra plain T-shirts or sweaters to loan neighbors who show up unaware of the rule.
  5. Read the ballot carefully, and ask questions!
Some ballots can be confusing even for smart and informed voters. Read instructions on the ballot carefully, and if you're not sure you understand something, ask a poll worker to explain. Remember what happened in 2000 in Florida--a confusing ballot caused thousands of people to mistakenly vote for the wrong Presidential candidate. Don't let that happen to you!

blogging for choice.

My brain, it is mashed potatoes at this point. But, I really do want to commemorate the 35th anniversary of Roe vs Wade. So, hear the words of LJ user [livejournal.com profile] muliebrity in the community [livejournal.com profile] ljforchoice .

My take on Blog for Choice
Why I Vote Pro-Choice

I vote pro-choice because I don't think busybody politicians or their friends in the Christian Right have any business telling me (or any other woman) that I'm SOL if I get pregnant when I don't want to be.

I vote pro-choice because abstinence-only sex ed and scare tactics don't work.

I vote pro-choice because I think women are smart enough to decide for themselves whether or not they are in a position to be a mother.

I vote pro-choice because I know that adoption isn't a cure-all, especially if the baby is non-white, sick or handicapped, not to mention the impact on the woman.

I vote pro-choice because every child should be a wanted child, not a punishment for daring to have consensual sex.

I vote pro-choice because abortions will happen whether or not they are legal, and women and doctors are not criminals.

I vote pro-choice because I don't think an embryo/zygote/fetus should have more rights than born people in terms of the ability to demand use of another person's body to survive.

I vote pro-choice because women deserve better than empty promises and a few cans of formula.

I vote pro-choice because reproductive rights are always under attack.

Amen, my sister.

But wait! [livejournal.com profile] pocochina brings on a kickass post on that same issue as well. go read here http://pocochina.livejournal.com/35510.html#cutid1

And take a deep breath. And gird your loins. And get back into the fight. And get Huckabee off that ballot.

A Call to Arms...

http://blackwomenvote.blogspot.com/2008/01/black-queen-know-your-terrain.html

BLACK QUEEN: KNOW YOUR TERRAIN

Queen,

The first lesson in the Queenly Art of Political Warfare is to fully understand your territories. You must learn how to fully master each one of these holdings in order to effectively rule your kingdom. Today, I will teach you of only one: the Territory of Communications.

Communications is the only tool used to establish your reputation. And a Queen’s ability to generate cooperation, build allies, and lead her people is in direct proportion to the strength of her reputation. -- Ujuzi

COMMUNICATIONS (THE MEDIA)

Black women must immediately understand how overwhelmingly critical communications are to the overall success of any political strategy. All strategists know that if you allow your opposition to define your reputation, your intentions, or your agenda to the people, then you have already lost the battle.

Black women in America do not fully realize or understand this principle, and for that reason, we have very few allies today. There is a picture of us in the mind of bankers, politicians, city planners, employers, governors, and teachers, and it’s not pretty. Many of these people are at best, indifferent to the collective pain that black women experience.

According to the established rules of The Art of Political Warfare, the very first move for us should be to establish a positive general perception of black women. (Notice that people want us to back off from the word 'positive' and replace it with an 'accurate' perception of us... however, they never seem to want to make that petty distinction when white men inaccurately portray themselves as the owners and saviors of the world.)

Strategists like Colin Powell will tell you that in all wars, the first objective of the military is to utterly destroy the opposition’s communications, by fair means or foul. For example, in Iraq, before even one soldier laid a pinky toe on foreign soil, the Air Force flew over the country and bombed every satellite dish, radio tower, radio station and television studio in sight.

Notice that Condoleeza Rice did not tip-toe to the Afghani studio executives, to politely request that they show ‘positive’ images of soldiers, to give Afghanis a ‘balanced view of America’.

When you take control of the communication of your image, likeness and reputation,

* Your enemies can not use the power of influence to create even more enemies against you.
* Your enemies can not interfere with your ability to create powerful alliances
