Yes. The best part of any newspaper is the middle-back, where "almost news" gets a spot. There I'd read about 90% ozone depletion, scientists -just- discovering that children can feel pain (and, so, you should actually use painkillers when you operate on them, not just paralyzing agents!!!!), dying salmon runs, deforestation and all the things that don't make pretty pictures or celebrity shots.
Related nuclear WTFs:
-First test to see if nuclear reaction would work- on a racketball court-, with graphite rods slowing the reaction so they didn't get a nuclear explosion.
-Slight possibility of any nuclear explosion chain-reacting the entire atmosphere in firey nuclear death. But hey, we needs them bombs!
- The nuclear powered ramjet- an unshielded reactor that vents air and superheats it out the back... also spewing direct fallout. Designed as a bomb delivery system before ICBMs were mastered.
- Suggested containment method for nuclear waste - "We'll explode a nuke in a cavern, the walls will be melted to glass, and just poke a hole in the top, and POUR the waste inside."
Yep. Those are the people making the bombs and protecting our country...
